Alex García
from May until August 22nd., 2008

Alex García creates “sculptural paintings” with different types of wood and other found materials. Though sometimes he uses new wood, staining it to a chosen color, often he preferes to work with an old piece that may be covered in layers of different paints, bearing the marks of time. These found treasures are pealed or sanded down revealing a layered past. Time becomes almost tangible in all the textures of the rugged surface. One wonders about the many lives that that small piece of wood has experienced. What did it use to be? When garcía pours resin over the piece, the liquid blacket works as a magnifying glass bringing out the small details and brightening up the colors. Stopping time in that precise moment, all the pieces converge into a new existence and become a new thing. At least for now…
